Polokwane overtake Chiefs despite derby stalemate

Polokwane City leapfrogged Kaizer Chiefs into eighth spot after a goalless draw against Sekhukhune United on Saturday afternoon.

Sekhukhune made three changes after their draw against SuperSport United, as Rally Bwalya, Vusimuzi Mncube and Asekho Tiwani were recalled.

Polokwane were boosted by the return of goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga and striker Douglas Mapfumo, as the two changes from their goalless draw against Richards Bay.

United had a chance early on to set the pace of the game after Chibuike Ohizu went through in the box but he fired his shot over the cross.

The game eventually opened up midway into the first stanza and just before the half-hour mark Siphesihle Mkhize had a chance for Sekhukhune after finding space in the box but he was denied by Sapunga.

Polokwane were threatening towards the end of the first stanza as Hlayisi Chauke came close to breaking the deadlock with a strike that flashed just wide.

Lehlohonolo Seema made a change at half-time to have an effect on their attack as Elias Mokwana replaced Mncube.

Sekhukhune gained momentum early in the second stanza and on the hour-mark Ohizu came close to breaking the deadlock with a header that missed narrowly wide.

Seema's men put City under pressure and with ten minutes to go, Tresor Yamba almost broke the deadlock with a header in the box that dragged just wide after a cross by Kgomotso Mosadi.

Rise and Shine defended in numbers in the dying minutes and restricted Sekhukhune, as the sides shared the spoils.
